The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has frozen the bank account of Sharif Zahir, Managing Director of Ananta Group and Chairman of United Commercial Bank, as part of a tax evasion investigation. NBR's intelligence agency, the Central Intelligence Cell (CIC), has instructed banks to freeze transactions from the account.
Officials have confirmed the freezing, stating that the bank accounts of four members of Sharif Zahir's family have also been frozen.
Detectives revealed that allegations of VAT evasion by a garment factory of Ananta Group were being investigated during the previous government. After the interim government took charge, a tax evasion probe against Mr Zahir's family was initiated.
Tax officials have collected various details, including the family's income tax records. Additionally, Mr Zahir is accused of duty evasion related to the import of a Rolls Royce car, which was subsequently seized by the Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation. A court case concerning the matter is ongoing.
