The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Reform Unity Council, a platform of protesting officials, has threatened a continuous complete shutdown at all offices of the tax, customs and VAT departments of the country from Saturday if the chairman of the agency is not removed.
The organisation called the new protest programme, calling the chairman a bureaucrat “implementing the agenda of the Awami League government” and accusing him of “indulging in an attempt to destabilise the country and the revenue system,” bdnews24.com reports.
The council’s President Hasan Mohammad Tarek Rikabder and Secretary General Sehela Siddiqua made the announcement at a press conference at the Rajasya Bhaban in Dhaka's Agargaon on Monday.
As per a previous announcement, more than a thousand officers and employees of all departments of the NBR in Dhaka observed a sit-in programme at the Rajasya Bhaban in the morning. In addition, a pen-down programme was held from 9:00 am to noon. Many were seen wearing shrouds to observe the programme.
