The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has directed field-level tax regions to strengthen their intelligence and investigation activities to prevent tax evasion and accelerate the recovery of unpaid taxes.
Bangladesh’s top tax collection agency issued a press release regarding the decision on Saturday, bdnews24.com reports.
The directive from a member of the NBR’s tax audit and intelligence cell included instructions on the formation of investigation teams in each tax region, the working methods that should be employed by the teams, the bases on which the teams can make recommendations, and the approval process for the committee that would undertake the recovery of evaded taxes.
The notification said that the relevant teams will start investigating cases based on various types of intelligence, allegations of tax evasion, information published in print and electronic media, inconsistencies and corrections in income tax documents and various registers, abnormal amount of tax-free income, abnormal amount of net assets in the asset statement compared to taxable income and taxes paid, etc.
If specific information and data of tax evasion is found at the investigation stage, the concerned team will submit a report for approval to the intelligence and investigation committee before taking action to recover the taxes.
If clear information and evidence of tax evasion is found, the investigation and intelligence committee of the concerned tax commissionerate will approve to take legal activities for revenue recovery.
Each tax commissionerate is instructed to enter the information and evidence in the prescribed form on a monthly basis and send detailed information on additional claims arising from investigation and intelligence activities and additional tax collection to the NBR by the 10th of the following month.
Through strengthening intelligence and investigation activities, the NBR hopes that it will be possible to recover evaded taxes, reduce tax evasion, and develop a fair tax culture.
