The volume of non-performing loan (NPL) in the banking sector reached an all-time record high of Tk 2.11 trillion at the end of June this year, according to the latest data from Bangladesh Bank.
The volume of bad loans increased by over Tk 290 billion in the three months to June, rising from Tk 1.82 trillion as of March 30, the central bank data showed.
The NPL now accounts for 12.56 per cent of total disbursed loans, which stood at Tk 16.83 trillion as of June 2024.
The burden of classified loans in the state-owned commercial banks was at 32.77 per cent of the outstanding loans, followed by specialised banks at 13.11 per cent, private commercial banks at 7.94 per cent, and foreign commercial banks at 4.74 per cent.
