The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) is set to hold a meeting today (Sunday) to devise strategies for stabilising the market of essential items during the upcoming Ramada, sources said.

Chaired by Prime Minister's Principal Secretary Mohammad Tofazzel Hossain Miah, the meeting is expected to review the prices, supplies and stock positions of the essential commodities.

Besides, it would take necessary steps to ensure safe and hassle-free travel of the home-bound people before the Eid-ul-Fitr.

Representatives from different ministries, divisions and state agencies are supposed to attend the meeting, according to a commerce ministry source. Consumers have been suffering a lot for some time now due to the unusual hikes in prices of key essential items, especially edible oil, sugar, egg, etc.

"We've taken initiatives to keep the prices stable throughout the year. The PMO meeting would analyse the prices and supply situation of commodities," said a senior commerce ministry official.

As part of its efforts to stabilise the market, the government has started the first phase of its month-long drive to sell essential items at subsidised rates among 10 million low-income cardholder families.

The second phase of the programme will be operated next month (April).
