Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) finally resumed drive against illegal housing companies around Dhaka city last month after a lapse of nearly five years.

Demolition drives against errant property developers and realtors are a routine work of the regulatory body.

Sources said Rajuk's enforced idleness is because of some dishonest officials who tried to turn into the saviors of such unapproved companies.

It last carried out a drive in 2013-14, they added.

Rajuk chairman Abdur Rahman asked the chief town planner six months ago to resume the drive against illegal housing companies mushrooming here.

But no tangible step was taken in the past five months.

However, the chairman took some officials to task for flouting his instructions at a meeting recently.

Talking to the FE, Rajuk's deputy town planner Kamrul Hasan Sohag said they have served notices on 25 unapproved housing companies.

They have been asked to inform Rajuk of their measures to stop putting advertisements for business, he added.

Mr Sohag said Rajuk has already conducted three such drives since July 2018.

"We dismantled 50 billboards of some 30 such companies from Kuril to Kanchan Bridge last week," he mentioned.

The city planner said they have issued notices to Basumoti and Trust developers close to Purbachal. A team will go to Savar to conduct a drive next week.

The FE obtained some of the notices issued on July 16 against the unauthorised real estate companies.

They included Haji M Gafur Land Developers, Innovative Holdings, Welfare Consortium, Titanic Holdings, Sabuj Chhaya Abason Project, New Dhaka Alliance, Inspired Development, and Atlantic Properties and Development.

About the sites of these projects, Mr Sohag said Gafur Land Developers has a project named 'Amulia Model Town' at Manda (near Motijheel) on 200-300 acres of land.

They have been doing the project for around 15 years without necessary approval, he added.

As to whether faulty companies will get approval, the Rajuk official said they are yet to submit their project papers.

It is yet to be known whether they have encroached on land or filled up water bodies, he added.

Sources said illegal land developers have mushroomed in Purbachal, Keraniganj and Savar under the very nose of the authorities concerned.

They have been cheating the easily gullible people through lucrative advertisements.
