Russia has expressed its interest in establishing direct air connectivity between Dhaka and Moscow.
Russian Ambassador to Dhaka Mr Alexander Mantytskiy expressed this interest when he met Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Muhammad Faruk Khan at his secretariat office on Thursday.
The Russian envoy said that a huge number of Russian tourists visit different places throughout the world every year. If direct flights between the two countries start, it would pave the way for the influx of Russian tourists to Bangladesh.
He also noted that Russia may contribute significantly to promoting the aviation industry of Bangladesh by providing technical support.
The civil aviation minister told the envoy that Bangladesh is keen to become the aviation hub of the region and the government is wholeheartedly working in that direction.
Welcoming the proposals for starting direct flights between the two countries, he said that the concerned departments should take forward discussions on this issue.
Terming Russia a reliable friend of Bangladesh, he said that the country will also welcome assistance from Russia in promoting the aviation industry.
He also urged Russian investors to invest in the tourism sector, adding that the government has, in the last 15 years, carried out massive infrastructure development in the aviation and tourism sectors.
