Social Islami Bank PLC (SIBL) has provided a donation of Tk 3.6 million (Tk 36 lakh) to Dhaka University to provide scholarships for underprivileged students with special needs. SIBL Chairman Professor Dr M Sadiqul Islam handed over the cheque to Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan at a ceremony held on Friday (February 28), according to a press release.
The ceremony, held at the Dhaka University Alumni Association's Alumni Floor, was attended by key dignitaries, including SIBL’s Acting Managing Director Md Nazmus Saadat.
Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan commended SIBL's commitment to supporting students facing financial hardship, particularly highlighting the bank's resilience in maintaining its support despite recent financial challenges. He acknowledged the leadership's efforts in overcoming difficult times to restore the bank's stability. "Their presence here is a testament to their dedication to the well-being of students," he observed.
Professor Dr M Sadiqul Islam emphasised SIBL's dedication to social responsibility, particularly in ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder students' education. "If everyone fulfilled their social responsibility, no student would have to return home," he said.
He also emphasised the bank’s resolve to support students even amidst financial difficulties, following the massive embezzlement of funds in the past. He encouraged the Alumni Association to create a fund for underprivileged students, assuring the bank's continued support.
In his remarks, Acting Managing Director Md Nazmus Saadat shared the bank’s struggle to regain its position after being taken over by a special force under the previous government. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to eradicate corruption in the country. He also praised the Alumni Association’s renewed vigour and expressed SIBL’s intention to continue supporting deserving students.
Scholarship recipient Zakaria, a student of Bijoy Ekattor Hall, expressed his gratitude, stating, “This financial support keeps our hopes alive, and I thank them for this effort. I aim to help other underprivileged students in the future, In sha’a Allah.”
