State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu has advised consumers to buy goods from stores that sell products at fixed prices rather than from traditional kitchen markets.

He offered the advice during a press conference at the Secretariat on Thursday, ahead of World Consumer Rights Day to be observed on Friday, March 15, local media reported.

He said that Ramadan goods are available at fixed prices in supermarkets, and these fixed-price stores have lower prices for products compared to traditional kitchen markets.

He pointed out that the Supermarket Association had written to him detailing how they would reduce prices on essential goods during Ramadan.

Mr Titu expressed surprise that the middle and upper classes, for whom supermarkets are ideal, are reluctant to shop there.

He mentioned that the ministry is monitoring each and every retail market in Dhaka city.

The state minister said that since 2009–10, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection has monitored 72,937 markets and realised Tk 1.2 billion (Tk 120 crore and 27 lakh) in fines.
