Rice-based economy can be an alternative to maintain the growth momentum of Bangladesh economy since the dominance of RMG sector is being shrinked due to cut-throat competition in the global apparel sector.

"For that, we need to improve the rice productivity and farmers’ income," Managing Director of ACI Agribusiness, Dr. F H Ansarey commented while addressing a discussion session, arranged by ACI Limited.

Director General of IRRI Dr. Matthew Morell, Managing Director of ACI Limited, Dr. Arif Dowla,, Managing Director of ACI Formulations Limited, Ms. Shusmita Anis, Dr. Nafees Meah, IRRI Representative for South Asia, Dr. Humnath Bhandari, IRRI Representative for Bangladesh, senior officials of ACI Ltd, scientists and professionals were present.

In his speech, Dr. Morell expressed his interest to enhance and strengthen the collaboration between ACI and IRRI.

Bangladesh is predominantly an agricultural country where agriculture sector plays a vital role in accelerating the economic growth. It is therefore important to have a profitable, sustainable and environment-friendly agricultural system in order to ensure long-term food security for people, the speakers in the meeting opined.

The socio-economic perspective of rice is important. Most of the farmers cultivate rice for self-employment and to meet family consumption need.

The speakers said Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in rice production. Still there is a gap in calorie and protein intake. Safe and nutritional food is a big concern. Moreover, the temperature difference between day and night adversely impacts the rice yield. Continual rise in number of population, change in climate, and elevation in life standard of population demand advanced and more tolerant rice varieties to ensure food security, proper nutrition, and sustainable development.
