UCB’s CSR initiative opens new horizon for rural students in tech Education

Madhabpasha, a serene village in Babuganj Upazila of Barishal, is surrounded by rivers and lush greenery. Amidst this quiet landscape stands a nearly century-old educational institution -Madhabpasha Chandradwip High School and College. Every day, around four hundred students come here to weave dreams and build their futures. But often, harsh realities stand in the way of those dreams.

Unlike urban institutions, this rural school has long lacked modern facilities — no advanced laboratories, no adequate technological tools. As a result, the scope of learning for these students has remained limited. While computer education has become a regular part of city schools, many students here have never even touched a keyboard.

That very reality inspired United Commercial Bank PLC (UCB) to step forward. UCB is not just a financial institution — it is a socially conscious organisation that strives to bring positive change to every layer of society. Whether it’s providing free heart treatment for children, offering scholarships to underprivileged yet meritorious students, or supporting education and environmental initiatives, UCB has consistently proven itself as a responsible social partner.

As part of this ongoing commitment, UCB recently extended its hand to Madhabpasha Chandradwip High School and College. Under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, the bank donated 10 new computers to the institution, opening a new window of opportunity for the students of this rural area.

In a brief yet joyous ceremony, representatives from UCB’s head office formally handed over the computers to the school’s Acting Principal, Jiban Krishna Bepari. The event was graced by the presence of young politician Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad, Governing Committee Chairman Dr Pradip Kumar Sarker, along with the principal, teachers, students, local public representatives, and respected community members. The atmosphere was filled with pride, joy, and gratitude.

The Acting Principal remarked, “For so long, our students only read the word ‘computer’ in their textbooks- now they can finally use one themselves. This is not just a set of machines; it marks a new beginning in improving the quality of education in our village.”

Parents shared their joy, saying that sending their children to the city for better education was never possible for everyone. Now, with technology education available in their own village, they feel immense relief and renewed hope.

UCB’s representatives stated, “We believe knowledge and technology are the most powerful tools for social change. Our initiative aims to ensure that the students of Madhabpasha are not left behind.”

These ten computers may seem small in number, but their impact could be transformative. Students of this school will now have the opportunity to learn computer operation, access the internet, engage in online education, and build digital skills. As technology begins to illuminate more such villages, Bangladesh will continue to advance- powered by knowledge and digital competence.

At the end of the day, one student from Madhabpasha Chandradwip High School and College said softly, “I used to think only city kids could learn computers. Now we can too.”

Within that single sentence lies the vision of a future Bangladesh- a nation where opportunity belongs to everyone, regardless of geography. And on that journey, UCB’s humane initiative shines as a bright and hopeful step forward.
