The United States has imported readymade garments (RMG) worth $25.21 billion from various countries in the first four months of this year.
During this period last year, the country imported apparel worth $32.39 billion, around 22.15 per cent higher than imported during current year, local news outlets said citing data from the US Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA).
As a result, RMG exports to US from Bangladesh, China, Vietnam, Indonesia and India have dropped.
Bangladesh exported RMG items worth $2.7 billion in January-April period of 2023. The amount of earning from apparel exports was $3.28 billion during this period in 2022.
RMG exports to US from Bangladesh dropped by 17.88 per cent year-on-year in January-April period of this year.
Bangladesh showed better performance in American market than most exporters as US-bound Chinese exports of readymade garments declined by 32.45 per cent and Vietnam’s exports dropped by 27.33 per cent during the period.
