The national statistical bureau is going to introduce a web application for supplying statistics based on GIS, aimed at ensuring easy access to data for all.
The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) with the technical support of the Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) is developing the app, BBS joint director Md Rafiqul Islam told a workshop on Tuesday.
Statistics and Informatics Division secretary Dr Shahnaz Arefin addressed the workshop as the chief guest with BBS director general Md Matiur Rahmanin the chair.
BBS additional secretary Farooq Ahmed and Prof Dr Manzurul Hassan of Jahangirnagar University, among others, also spoke at the event.
Mr Rafiqul said the general public or any agencies will have free access to the web app where they can get geo-spatial data and statistics on socio-economy, demography and environment.
Dr Shahnaz said since BBS has created huge data and statistics through environmental surveys under the 'Environment, Climate Change and Disaster Statistics (ECDS) project,' the upcoming app will help get information regarding SDGs.
"Once the environmental data in Bangladesh was inadequate from where we have recovered now. The new website will help a lot to inform people and researchers regarding environment and climate change-related data," she said.
The app is now under scrutiny which will be open to public soon, the ECDS project director said.
