The prices of onions and broiler chickens have gone up over the past week while the prices of brinjal, and green chili remain high, showing no signs of easing.

In Dhaka's retail markets, local onions that were selling for Tk 55-60 a kg just a week ago are now priced at Tk 60-70 per kg.

Nayon Ghosh, a grocer at Sher-E-Bangla Road in Mohammadpur, told the FE that local onions are currently being sold for Tk 54-56 per kg in the wholesale markets of Karwan Bazar and Shyambazar, marking a rise of Tk 5-6 a kg over the past seven days.

Tarek Hasan, a spice trader at Karwan Bazar, said onion prices have started rising in Rajbari, Gopalganj, Faridpur, and Pabna due to ongoing rains. He said although there is enough stock in traders' warehouses, the rain has disrupted supply, leading to the price hike.

According to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), onion prices have increased by 10 per cent.

Prices of broiler chicken have risen by Tk 10-15 a kg in a week. On Thursday, it was being sold for Tk 170-190 a kg in various markets, while egg prices have remained static. Farm eggs were sold at Tk 120-130 a dozen throughout the last week.

Even though imports have helped bring down green chili prices slightly, they still remain high. The item is now selling for Tk 240-260 per kg, down from last week's Tk 260-280.

Last week's continuous rain disrupted vegetable supply, but the situation is gradually improving. Due to short supply, brinjal prices remain high, selling for Tk 90-100 per kg. On the other hand, teasel gourd is selling for Tk 80-90 a kg, and bitter gourd for Tk 75-80 a kg, while carrot and tomato remain quite higher at Tk 150-160 a kg and snake gourd is priced at Tk 60-70 a kg. Only a few vegetables are selling at lower prices -- Tk 40-50 a kg.

On the other hand, rice, beef and fish prices have remained static.
