Western Marine Shipyard Ltd, Bangladesh's leading export-oriented shipbuilder, has delivered a high-powered tugboat to a UAE-based buyer, while another is scheduled for export later this month.
The delivery ceremony was held at Chittagong Boat Club on Thursday, attended by Lt. Gen (Retd) Abdul Hafiz, Adviser and Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Defence and National Solidarity Development, as the chief guest.
Humaid Mohammed Abdulla Darwish AlTamimi, Chargé d'Affaires of the UAE Embassy in Dhaka, and Khalid Almarzooqi, Vice President of International Business Development at Khalifa Economic Zones, Abu Dhabi, were present as special guests.
The newly delivered vessel is part of an eight-ship order signed in 2023 with UAE-based Marwan Shipping Ltd. The vessels included two tugboats, four landing crafts, and two oil tankers, sources said.
The two high-powered tugboats are "Khalid" (65-ton bollard pull) and "Ghaya" (80-ton bollard pull).
In January, Western Marine delivered a 69-metre landing craft named 'Rayan' to the same buyer. The remaining five vessels from the order are expected to be delivered in fiscal year 2025-26.
Capt Sohail Hasan, Managing Director of Western Marine, said: "Western Marine exported the first ship to this buyer in 2017. The shipbuilder has, so far, exported 34 ships to 11 countries, with a total value exceeding USD 137 million."
