Cultural intelligence (CQ): the new IQ

Published :

Updated :

Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is the capability to relate and work effectively in culturally diverse situations.

Beyond existing notions of cultural sensitivity and awareness, it is crucial to identify recurring capabilities of individuals who can successfully accomplish goals and objectives, no matter what the cultural context is.

The term cultural intelligence and the abbreviation “CQ” was developed by the research done by Soon Ang and Linn Can Dyne when measuring and predicting intercultural performance.

CQ is measure on a scale, similar to that of the intelligence quotient. People with high CQ are regarded as those who can blend into any environment than those with lower CQ.

In a vastly growing economy, Bangladesh has had a fair share of its recent taste of diversity. More and more we are meeting foreigners, working with them, getting to hear about their news on social media and even tasting their food in our own land. It is inevitable that as we progress, people and things of other cultures will surround us. CQ is therefore highly valid for us at this age to keep in mind and improve on.
