25 die daily from drowning in India's West Bengal: Study

At least 25 drowning deaths are reported on average every day in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, with half of the victims being children, a recent survey revealed.

The findings of the study, conducted by a non-governmental organization Child in Need Institute, and The George Institute for Global Health, were released in Kolkata on Friday on the occasion of World Drowning Prevention Day.

The survey noted that 9,191 people lose their lives annually in West Bengal due to drowning, reports Xinhua.

A mortality rate of 121 per 100,000, among the highest ever recorded globally, was recorded in the survey conducted last year, from March to December, on a population of about 18 million people.
