Amnesty calls on India, Pakistan to uphold international obligations, protect civilians

Amnesty International has urged the governments of India and Pakistan to fulfil their obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law, emphasising the protection of civilians amid the recent escalation of hostilities between the two nations.

The organisation stated that both countries must take all necessary measures to safeguard civilians and minimise suffering and casualties, according to Dawn.

Amnesty International highlighted that as forces from both countries are now engaged in open hostilities, neither security nor justice will be achieved through the senseless loss of more civilian lives.

The call comes in the wake of a significant escalation, with reports indicating that India launched a series of strikes under ‘Operation Sindoor’ across Pakistan, resulting in civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. In response, Pakistan's military reportedly downed several Indian jets and drones.

Amnesty International's statement underscores the urgent need for both nations to prioritise the protection of civilians and adhere to their international legal obligations to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
