The wife of Nepal’s former prime minister Jhalanath Khanal has died after being injured in a fire set by protesters, according to multiple news outlets.

NDTV reported that on Tuesday, protesters, led by Gen Z, set fire to Khanal’s residence in the Dallu area of the capital Kathmandu.

Rajalaxmi Chitrakar sustained critical burn injuries in the blaze.

Family members confirmed she was rescued from the house and taken to Kirtipur Burn Hospital, where she later died while receiving treatment.

On the same day, protesters also set ablaze the residence of Nepal’s prime minister KP Sharma Oli.

Demonstrators chased and assaulted Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, 65, on the streets.

Violence during Monday’s protests left 19 people dead, including students, after police opened fire.

The unrest quickly took on an anti-government dimension, forcing the administration to lift social media restrictions, though protesters maintained the resignation of the prime minister as their primary demand.

Several political parties and members of Oli’s cabinet expressed support for the call for his resignation.

Amid the chaos, the prime minister resigned on Tuesday.

Protesters then set fire to and vandalised the homes of other ministers and senior political leaders.

From noon, the Army began evacuating all ministers and top party leaders from their residences and apartments by helicopter, taking them to undisclosed military locations.

Gen Z demonstrators also entered the Singha Durbar complex, the country’s secretariat.

NDTV reported that President Ram Chandra Poudel is also expected to resign, following Oli’s footsteps, citing multiple sources.
