India has lifted the ban on onion exports after about half a year, imposing a minimum export price of $550 per metric tonne.

In a notification on Saturday, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade of India revised the export policy for onions from the 'prohibited' to 'free' category, according to Indian news outlets.

The decision came into effect immediately and will remain in place until further directives.

The central government of India took the decision just days before the foremost onion-producing area, especially Maharastra state, heads to a general election in the next phase.

On Friday night, the country imposed a 40 per cent duty on the export of onions.

In December last year, India banned the export of onions till March 31, 2024. The ban was extended till further orders last month.

Despite the ban, the country had allowed shipments to some friendly countries based on the central government’s prior permission.
