Seven people died in an avalanche in central Nepal on Monday while attempting to climb a mountain, police said.

A team of 15 people, with five foreign climbers and 10 Nepali mountain guides, was hit by the avalanche at the base camp of Yalung Ri Peak in Dolakha district, reports Xinhua.

"Seven bodies have been recovered, including five foreigners and two Nepalis. Three are Americans, one is Italian, and another is Canadian," Gyan Kumar Mahato, chief of the district police, told Xinhua, adding that four are injured and four are missing.

A helicopter was sent for rescue, but could not land due to bad weather, he said.

Nepal had granted permissions to 1,450 climbers by Friday to scale 59 mountains during the fall climbing season, which runs from September to November.
