Jeep falls into ravine, killing nine in India

Nine people have been killed after a jeep in which they were travelling, skidded off a road in northern Indian state of Uttarakhand and fell into a ravine on Wednesday, said police.

The incident occurred at Chalkhi area of Champawat district, about 410 km southeast of Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand, a police official posted in Dehradun said.

Eight bodies have been recovered so far and the rescue operation is going on, the official added.

News agency Xinhua reported citing police that the vehicle was travelling from neighbouring Pithoragarh district and heading towards Tanakpur.

The cause of the accident could not be known immediately.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has expressed grief and ordered a magisterial probe into the accident.
