Stalker ‘burns woman alive’ in southern India

A young woman was burnt alive allegedly by her stalker on Monday night in Adambakkam area of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, said police.

Reports said the man was stalking and harassing her for a long time and claimed to be in love with her.

The victim's mother and sister suffered burn wounds while trying to save the deceased, Induja.

"Her mother has suffered 49 percent burns, while as her sister has been admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit," police sources said.

The accused somehow managed to flee after the incident.

In August this year a 15-year-old girl's hand was chopped off by her stalker in Uttar Pradesh state.Sexual attacks on women and girls in India put a question mark on their safety and efficiency of police force in the country, according to Xinhua news agency.

In December 2012 a fatal gang-rape of a medical student in New Delhi brought spotlight on crimes against women in India.

The incident saw huge protests and resulted in new anti-rape laws in the country. However, brutal sexual attacks against women continue to be reported across India.
