Three friends die in Australia car crash leaving BD community in shock

Darwin's tight-knit Bangladeshi community has been devastated after three friends were killed in a horrific car crash at Kakadu, only months after others died in a crash at Litchfield National Park in Australia.

Initial reports from police suggest driver inexperience may have played a role.

The crash occurred on the Kakadu Highway at 12.30pm on Saturday, about six kilometres north of Cooinda Lodge, reports ABC News.

Three people, believed to be two women and one man, were killed, while the four others in the Toyota Prado were injured.

The identities of the deceased are yet to be known.

The other four people are now in a stable condition at Royal Darwin Hospital, although three remain in the intensive care unit.

It came less than a year after the Bangladeshi community lost two other friends in a car crash at Litchfield National Park.

Speaking to media this morning, NT Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Commander Tony Fuller said a 29-year-old had been driving a hired Toyota Prado from Jabiru to Cooinda when he "lost control on a large, sweeping bend".

One person was ejected from the car, which raised police concerns as to whether they were wearing a seatbelt.

"We understand the driver is not used to that vehicle, he's more used to driving a smaller vehicle around town," Fuller added.

Mahmudul Hasan, the president of the Bangladeshi Student Association of Charles Darwin University, said about 100 people gathered outside the Royal Darwin Hospital last night to pray for the four who were injured.

He believed all three who were killed were married, and survived by their spouses, and less than 30 years old.

Darwin's Bangladeshi community is believed to have about 250 members.
