United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has said that journalists around the world face growing dangers while searching for the truth, including verbal abuse, legal threats, physical attacks, imprisonment, and torture.

“Some are even killed,” he said in his message marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. “On this day, we demand justice.”

Guterres said nearly nine out of ten killings of journalists remain unsolved, as per a press release.

He noted that Gaza has been the deadliest place for journalists in any conflict and again called for independent and fair investigations.

Guterres warned that impunity is not only unfair to victims and their families but also harms press freedom and encourages more violence.

The UN chief urged all governments to investigate every case, punish offenders, and make sure journalists can work freely everywhere.

He also raised concerns over rising online abuse, especially against women journalists.

“When journalists are silenced, we all lose our voice,” Guterres said.
