Bangladesh is a nation brimming with youthful energy standing at a pivotal moment. With around 50 per cent of its population under the age of 30, the role of youths in nation-building is crucial. Youths are not only the future leaders but also the driving force behind positive change in the present. By actively participating in education, community service, innovation, and leadership, youths of Bangladesh can make a significant impact on our nation's development. Below are the areas that need to be integrated into the regular life of youths to ensure that their energy brings about coordinated and sustainable change.

Technical education and vocational training: The bedrock of any progressive society is their education system. Firstly, students must prioritise acquiring education without trying to cut corners in classes and exams. According to recent data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (BANBEIS), the literacy rate among youth aged 15-24 has reached 94.7 per cent as of 2023, indicating significant progress. However, the literacy rate is only a starting metric. What our youths need today involves developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence.

Moreover, technical and vocational training should be given equal importance. In a recent interview, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc. said that China has the most number of technically skilled people and that is the key reason for global companies to set up manufacturing plants in China; it's not cheap labour. This is where our future target should be. Youths should be encouraged to pursue technical education and vocational training. This can open up numerous opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship and will make our country a destination for FDIs. Rather than following the herd mentality of aiming for BCS and bank jobs, technical jobs should be pursued. Government must make these professions attractive as well. And finally, in every sector, programmes and culture must be built to embrace lifelong learning.

Community service and volunteering: Community service is a powerful way for students to make a direct impact on society. Recent data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) indicates that youth engagement in volunteer activities has increased by 15 percent over the past five years. During this opportune moment, programmes must be designed so that youths take up different engaging local community service projects that allow them to understand the needs and challenges of their communities. For example, ensuring cleanliness can be the first goal of this. Another one can be organising health camps. A current health camp organised by students at Dhaka University provided free medical check-ups to over 1,000 residents in underprivileged areas.

Volunteering instils a sense of responsibility and empathy in the community. According to a 2023 survey by the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development, 78 per cent of students who participated in community service reported an increased sense of social responsibility. By encouraging their peers to volunteer, students can create a ripple effect, inspiring others to contribute to their communities.

Innovation and entrepreneurship: Innovation is the engine of growth for any country and youths can be at the forefront of driving this change. Here universities and colleges should play a crucial role by creating an environment that empowers youths to develop new ideas and solutions to existing problems. Supporting student-led startups and entrepreneurial ventures is essential. In 2023 alone, Bangladesh saw a 25 per cent increase in student-founded startups, according to a report by Startup Bangladesh.

These initiatives not only create job opportunities but also stimulate economic growth. Pathao and 10 Minute School, both started by youths, have become household names today. Bangladeshi people around the world who have the necessary connections and experience can also consider coming back to Bangladesh or contributing by investing, mentoring, and guiding youths to build innovative companies.

Environmental awareness and action: Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Environmental issues are among the most pressing challenges of our time. Youths can play a good role in raising awareness about these issues and driving change. By educating their peers and family members about environmental conservation and sustainable practices, they can create a more environmentally conscious society.

Participation in sustainability initiatives has gained momentum among Bangladeshi students. For example, the Bangladesh Youth Environmental Initiative (BYEI) reported that over 50,000 students participated in tree plantation drives and clean-up campaigns in 2023 alone. Many youth organisations have participated in working on different environmental issues as well. They are actively contributing to building a greener and more sustainable Bangladesh helping to mitigate environmental degradation and ensuring a healthier future for all. This should continue with greater passion and recognition from the government.

Advocacy and social change: Youths will always be at the forefront of social change movements. More so in today's world by leveraging social media and other platforms to raise awareness about key issues and advocate for change. Youths should be encouraged to participate in peaceful protests and advocacy campaigns to drive social improvement. In 2023, student-led protests against environmental degradation and gender-based violence brought national attention. Collaborating with NGOs and community organisations has further amplified their efforts as well. Student partnerships with local NGOs have helped expand access to education and healthcare in rural areas. These help youths become better citizens gradually as well.

Political and civic engagement: Understanding the political landscape and actively participating in the democratic process is vital for the development of any nation.

Students should be encouraged to educate themselves about their political rights. Engaging in various leadership roles within educational institutions is another important way for students to prepare for future political and civic responsibilities. By taking an active role in shaping policies and advocating for the needs of their peers, all youths can gain valuable experience and contribute to a more participatory democracy. This will help to build a stronger and more inclusive political culture in Bangladesh.

Building a culture of tolerance and inclusivity: Lastly, youths need to actively embrace diversity and inclusivity and create tolerance for different races, religions, genders and communities. Youths need to step up and play a pivotal role in promoting a culture of tolerance and understanding. Educational institutions should be spaces where diversity is celebrated, and every student feels valued. By promoting inclusivity and unity, students and youths can help build a national identity rooted in mutual respect and shared values.

The youth hold the key to a brighter future for Bangladesh. Through education, community service, innovation, and leadership, they can contribute significantly to the nation's development. By embracing their roles as active citizens and change-makers, youths can help build a better Bangladesh for themselves and future generations. It is a collective effort and every small contribution counts. The journey towards a better Bangladesh begins with the active involvement and dedication of its young minds.
