Bangladesh among UN's climate-focused countries: UN climate envoy

Bangladesh has been named among the 30 focused countries announced by the United Nations Secretary-General on mitigating the global climate effect, UN Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) Mami Mizutori has said.
As a result, Bangladesh will receive assistance on a priority basis to deal with the negative effects of climate change and natural disasters, she said during a bilateral meeting with Environment Minister Md Shahab Uddin at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
The UN assistance will include preparations, monitoring, communications and early warning systems for various types of disasters, with an emphasis on promoting green technology, she added.
Mami Mizutori is also a Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).
Highlighting that Bangladesh has made appreciable progress in various social indicators, she said the world has a lot to learn from the country's achievements.
In the meeting, Minister Md Shahab Uddin said that Bangladesh government is committed to safeguarding people's lives and livelihoods from the effects of climate change.
He mentioned the implementation of Delta Plan 2100, the National Adaptation Plan, and Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan as key initiatives in this regard.
The minister further said that protecting biodiversity and undertaking climate adaptation and mitigation activities require significant funding.
Minister Md Shahab Uddin expressed the need for international organizations, including the United Nations, to provide the necessary assistance for Bangladesh to fulfill its international commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
