Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez, president of one of the trade organisations Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) has said businesses want a democratic government, advising the interim government to initiate the election process without delay.

Speaking at a media briefing at the organisation's office in Dhaka’s Tejgaon on Saturday, he said: "I think the interim government should move into the election process as quickly as possible, no matter how short the term, to bring relief to all.”

The BCI president says the political parties do not talk about the economy as they are not concerned about the sector but make different comments about each other.

He said the government is implementing labour laws to get back the US Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) in the apparel sector.

Parvez warned the government is following the IMF prescription which will affect the economy, as per a bdnews24.com report.

The interim government can make a roadmap for the rest of the reforms by implementing necessary ones, according to him.

Responding to a journalist’s question, the BCI president said: “The Bangladesh Bank has taken a contractionary policy and reduced the supply of liquidity. We can prepare and work in many sectors to meet compliance with the IMF prescription. However, the full implementation of the prescription will harm the economy."

Bangladesh is expected to graduate from the list of least developed countries (LDCs) by 2026. However, Parvez said the deadline should be extended to 2029.

"The last Awami League government had walked the path of transition with inflated economic figures to take the credit. We businesspeople think that if this deadline is not extended, the country's economy will collapse.”
