Women in Bangladesh spend nearly one-fourth time of a day on unpaid domestic and caregiving services, according to a national survey.

They spend on average 4.6 hours and 1.2 hours, totaling 5.8 hours a day on unpaid domestic services and caregiving services a day respectively, according to the survey styled "Time Use Survey 2021" released on Sunday.

By contrast, men do the same jobs for 0.6 hours and 0.2 hours respectively, revealed the survey conducted by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

The TUS is the first of its kind in the country carried out to visualise the invisible works of women in society.

The main objective of the TUS was to increase the visibility of women's unpaid domestic and caregiving work in their everyday lives through providing better gender statistics.

The survey covered both urban and rural areas of all eight divisions of Bangladesh. Using a two-stage stratified sampling design, 8,000 households were randomly selected for the survey.

It ensured almost equal representation of respondents, with 49.7 per cent of men and 50.3 per cent of women in the sample design.

It shows that in domestic work activities, women spend the most time on food and meal management and preparation than men.

Similar goes for other domestic work activities (cleaning and maintaining of own dwelling and surrounding, household management for own final use, and as such).

Women aged 25-44 are the most active in domestic work activities like food and meal management and preparation (237.64 minutes), cleaning and maintaining of their own dwellings and surroundings (43.61 minutes), and so on, except for shopping and traveling.

They spend 1.15 hours in childcare and 0.03 hours caring for dependent and non-dependent adults, whereas men do the same for 0.16 hours and 0.01 hours respectively.

Women are mostly busy with their unpaid domestic and caregiving services in the households.
