Inequality increases after IMF programmes in countries: Dr Debapriya

The inequality has increased in those countries where the IMF programmes were continued, said Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, a noted economist and a distinguished fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), on Monday.
"Now it is a matter of observation for Bangladesh as the government is implementing different conditions of the IMF here," he said while speaking at a pre-budget discussion.
He questioned that whether Bangladesh will implement all the terms and conditions of the IMF for taking its loan.
"Good subsidy should be continued and bad one should be scrapped. Bad subsidies like the capacity charge for power producers should be reduced and those funds should be transferred to agricultural inputs," Debapriya Bhattacharya said.
“We are currently observing that Bangladesh’s national budget has now become parent-less and IMF has emerged as foster-father.”
“Actually we economists had been suggesting Bangladesh to conduct reforms for a long time but it is doing under the pressure of IMF,” he added.
