NBR looks to boost revenue collection thru' drive

The Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched a crackdown on the corporate taxpayers that might have evaded tax by concealing real income.

Officials said the Cell would raid the premises of the taxpayers based on suspicion of tax evasion by the companies. It would conduct several drives to ensure compliance.

In the first phase, the CIC team led by its deputy director general Masudur Rahman raided Salahuddin Specialized Hospital at Tikatuli in the city on Tuesday.

Talking to the FE, CIC joint director Md Niaz Morshed said they had information that the hospital has long been concealing its real income and evading source taxes.

"We have seized the hospital's IT servers and other documents of the last five years to cross check with their tax returns and find out the volume of evaded tax," he said.

What the team found in the raid showed initial evidence of tax evasion, he said, adding that the drive will continue.

Officials said the taxmen would take legal action after scrutinising the hospital's financial statements and other documents.

They added that the tax evasion by companies could be checked through such crackdowns and it would help the NBR boost its corporate tax collection.

Currently, only 30,000 corporate taxpayers submit returns out of more than 288,466 companies registered with the Registrar of the Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC).

The CIC, composed of officials from the income tax, VAT and customs wings, is empowered to conduct special drives and investigations against the suspected tax evaders.

In case of any information-based suspicion, the CIC collects tax returns from the field offices, conducts scrutiny and holds hearings before taking any legal action.

Mr Niaz said the CIC would invite representatives from the Salahuddin Hospital to attend hearings after cross-checking of the IT servers and documents by the taxmen.

The hospital authorities could not be reached for their comments.
