Rural bank deposits down by 22.56 per cent: Bangladesh Bank

Bank deposits in rural areas have decreased by 22.56 per cent, while urban deposits are up 6.37 per cent, said Bangladesh Bank in its latest report made available to media on Tuesday.

The total number of bank depositors until September 2023 stood at nearly 150 million (15 crore), said the report. They deposited over Tk 170 million (Tk 17 crore) in their accounts during this period.

Among them, 1 lakh 13 thousand 586 bank accounts holders have deposits of TK 10 million (Tk 1.0 crore) and above. Around Tk 7.26 lakh crore has been deposited in these accounts. That means such account holders account for 42.35 per cent of the total deposits in the country’s banking sector.

Till June 2023, the total number of depositors was over 14 crore 59 lakh with deposits amounting to Tk 16.87 lakh crores in these account.

There were Tk 1.0 lakh 13 thousand 554 bank accounts with deposits of taka more than 10 million (one crore).

According to this, the accounts holding TK 10 million (Tk 1.0 crore) and more increased by 32 in a span of three months and seven thousand 66 in a span of one year, the BB report said.
