A clash between the residents of Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall and Shaheed Rafiq-Jabbar Hall at Jahangirnagar University (JU) resulted in the injuries of approximately 20 students today.

The incident occurred at Rabindra Chatwar around 3:30 a.m. and was triggered by an alleged incident of harassment against a student's girlfriend.

The students from both halls threw bricks and stones for one and a half hours, and three loud firecrackers burst, causing panic among the students. Rods, cricket bats, stumps, iron pipes, and other native weapons were used in the confrontation between students.

The doctor on duty at the university's medical centre confirmed, "A minimum of 20 students have been injured, with 12 of them being in a serious condition."

Subsequently, as the situation returned to normal, the teachers in charge of both halls, the proctorial body, and a few security personnel arrived at the location. They listened to the students talk about the incident.

As said by them, on the night of July 12, when Mohiuddin Miraj, a first-year student of History and resident of Rabindranath Tagore Hall, was purchasing drinks at the New Arts Building with his girlfriend, Rafi, a first-year student of English from Rafiq-Jabbar Hall, allegedly harassed Miraj's girlfriend along with other students.

On Friday, around 10:30 p.m., Miraj and his friends confronted Rafi at Rabindra Chatwar, leading to an altercation between the two sides. Though the seniors of the two halls reconciled the matter, the students from both halls engaged in the conflict late at night.

Professor Dr Nazmul Hassan Talukder, provost of Rabindranath Tagore Hall, said the incident is undesirable. "Strict action should be taken against the students, and they should be prosecuted after a fair investigation of this incident."

Assistant Proctor Md. Roni Hossain said, "We will submit a primary report first. The Disciplinary board will conduct further investigation, and the guilty will be punished accordingly."
