A young person's body was discovered hanging from a tree on the campus of Jahangirnagar University (JU). The deceased, identified as Jisan Ahmed (24), is the son of Nazrul Islam, a staff member at Al-Beruni Hall of the university.
Passersby discovered him hanging from a tree near Salam Barkat to Taj Uddin Hall Road at the university on Monday morning (May 6). Upon being notified, Ashulia police station arrived and retrieved the body. In response to the community's requests, authorities filed a case of unnatural death and permitted the burial of the deceased.
Staff members at Al-Beruni Hall commented that Jisan Ahmed resided with his family behind the Ansar camp in the Kalabagan area near the campus. Their ancestral residence is situated in Sadar Upazila of Sherpur district. After completing his higher secondary education there, he managed a cow farm. Speculation suggests that he might have taken his own life amid a family conflict.
Nazrul Islam, the father of the deceased, recounted that his son left home in the evening and returned around 9:30 p.m. the previous night. Upon his return, his mother expressed concern about the cows not being watered yet, which seemed to upset him, leading to him eventually leaving the house. Despite efforts to locate him later that night, he could not be found.
Sudipta Shaheen, the university's Chief Security Officer, personally knew the deceased and described him as well-behaved. "Following a minor disagreement with his mother, he left the room and was not seen after that. No formal complaints have been filed by any family members regarding the incident," said Mr. Shaheen.
Sub-Inspector GM Aslamuzzaman of the Ashulia Police Station stated, "A case of unnatural death would be filed in connection with this incident. The burial of the body is permitted as there is no complaint from the family or local residents. Further action would be taken if any complaints are received."
