Dhaka University observes mourning day

The authorities of Dhaka University (DU) on Sunday have observed Mourning Day commemorating the tragic deaths of students, employees and guests in a building collapse at the university's Jagannath Hall on this day in 1985.

Marking the day, DU authorities hoisted black flags atop all the halls and main buildings of the university, lowering the university flag to half-mast.

Wearing black badge, students, teachers and employees placed wreaths at Jagannath Hall Memorial, led by university Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman.

A total of 40 people- 26 students and 14 employees and guests died as the roof of the auditorium of the then Assembly Building (now October Memorial Building) collapsed on October 15, 1985.
