'DU is not a religious institution': Teachers' Association of DU

"Dhaka University (DU) is not a religious institution. Here, the same policy applies to students of all religions, castes and genders. In this case, no separate academic policy is possible for any particular group or class," said the Teachers' Association of DU.

The teachers' association informed this in a statement on the hijab issue of the university's viva board. A statement signed by the president of the teachers' association, Nasimul Haque Bhuiyan, and General Secretary Zeenat Huda was sent to the media on Sunday.

As per the statement, "It is mandatory for the students to keep their faces uncovered in viva and other academic activities as per the university's rules, but confusion is being spread in this regard. Teachers are being prevented from fulfilling their professional responsibilities by misinterpreting religious values."

"The teachers' association strongly demanded strict disciplinary action against the disruptors or miscreants who want to spoil the university's learning environment."

The teachers' association also noted that it is important to ensure 'identity' in any examination as per the academic policy. In this case, the teacher in charge must match the student's face with the admit card photo, which is part of the teachers' academic and professional responsibility.
"Non-cooperation and refusal to show face in carrying out this kind of responsibility is an indirect denial of academic norms. In this case, some students are making false propaganda and lies against the teachers, which is undesirable."

They mentioned, "Dhaka University embraces non-sectarian values, where everyone can practice their religion and dress. On the other hand, academic activities also have special regulations. It should be remembered that DU is not a religious institution. Here the same policy applies to students of all religions, castes, castes and genders. In this case, no separate academic policy is possible for any particular group or class. Therefore, according to the principles applicable to all, it is natural that university teachers will conduct academic activities independently."

The statement of the teachers' association also mentioned that the teachers' association is deeply concerned about the recent mischief that has been going on in the university by spreading confusion about keeping the face uncovered in the Bengali Department and the Institute of Education and Research (IER). It must be remembered that Dhaka University respects religious values and, at the same time, values the academic freedom of teachers.
