Organised by the Department of Fine Arts, a five-day long 'Annual Artwork Exhibition-2022' is going on at the Old Arts Building of Jahangirnagar University. This artefacts exhibition has been organised for the fourth time, remarking the department's anniversary, which was inaugurated yesterday. Organised on a large scale, this year's exhibition on the 11th anniversary of the department surpassed the previous three events.
The exhibition features 152 artworks by 82 students studying Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) under the Department of Fine Arts which will continue till March 23 from 9 am to 5 pm in room number 105, 107, 108 and 109 of the Old Arts Building.
Earlier on Sunday (March 19) at 05:30 pm, the exhibition started with the 'Opening and Prize Distribution Ceremony'.
In the session conducted by Dhiman Sarkar, Assistant Professor of the Department, the renowned artist of the country, Prof. Mohammad Eunus, spoke.
"I always think that I am a student and I want to die as a student. This is probably the biggest achievement as an artist. When we were in college we used to look forward to this annual art exhibition day. The work done throughout the year is evaluated on this day. I will say one thing to the students, you must seize from the teachers. There has to be a good student-teacher relationship in the fine arts department, otherwise there is no real interaction in this stream."
Eunus further remarked, "Students in our Dhaka University have been drawing models by taking pictures on their mobile phones, this practice is not good. There is a downside of this practice in my opinion. Observation is the most important thing for an artist. Painting by hand is not painting. Drawing by hand increases skill but painting must done with heart."
"Previously, Fine Arts students always kept a sketchbook with them. I spend 50 years as an artist, I still keep a sketchbook with me. I think there should be an annual award for maintaining the sketchbook," he noted.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr Nurul Alam, said, "I extend my warmest congratulations to the organises and to all who have received awards. There is good news for the teachers and students of the fine arts department. The good news is, the Fine Art Faculty building will be constructed very soon."
"In the last meeting of ECNEC, I spoke to them. They said that the building should be 10 storeys. But I said that the building will be as per the previous design, because there is a flying zone for birds here, for which the 6 storey design is applicable," he added.
"Afterwards, Maiz (MM Maizuddin, Associate Professor of the faculty) told me that it had been passed; hopefully, it will be approved by next week. When this faculty building is built, 4 to 5 more departments will be inaugurated, and we will proudly say that Jahangirnagar University has a Fine Art Faculty.”
Later, the guests presented crests and certificates to the awarded students. The Vice-Chancellor announced the opening of the exhibition after awarding the prizes.
Assistant Professor Farhana Tabassum, the Fine Arts Department chairman, presided over the opening ceremony. Dean of Faculty of Arts and Humanities Professor Md Mozammel Haque, Acting Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Bashir Ahmed, Proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan, Professor ATM Atiqur Rahman, Professor Alamgir Kabir, Professor Shahedur Rashid and others were present.
They said that The Fine Arts Department had fulfilled the lacunae of Jahangirnagar University to bring out the indescribable beauty of nature and hope the department will bestow a prominent role in the glorious journey of Jahangirnagar University.
