Department of Geological Sciences of Jahangirnagar University (JU) inaugurates an Automated Weather Station today. At 10 am, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Nurul Alam inaugurated the weather station at the Geo Park in front of the Geological Sciences Department. This weather station was established with the financial support of Japan's Kagawa University.

In the chief guest's speech during the inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor remarked, "The establishment of this station will enhance the quality of education and research within the Department of Geological Sciences. It will also increase the department's capacity for climate research.

The enduring friendship between Japan and Bangladesh is noteworthy. Bangladesh warmly acknowledges Japan's role as a development partner. Heartfelt appreciation goes to Kagawa University authorities and all those involved."

The Vice-Chancellor called for future expansion of bilateral education and research opportunities.

Professor Dr. Toru Terao from Kagawa University's Faculty of Education expressed that the educational and research collaboration between Kagawa University and JU's Department of Geological Sciences will persist. In the times ahead, both universities will focus on exploring fresh avenues for shared learning and cooperative opportunities.

The ongoing bilateral research between Professor Dr. ATM Shakhawat Hossain of the department and Professor Dr. Toru Terao involves the installation of an instrument. They are working together, and the research goal is to compare and monitor regional and local climate changes. To achieve this, an automatic weather-measuring device has been set up.

The project, funded by the Japan Society of Promotional Sciences, is estimated to cost around 20 lakh Taka. This advanced instrument can automatically measure precipitation, wind speed/direction, temperature, and humidity every minute. The collected atmospheric data will be stored on a server automatically.

In the opening ceremony of the weather station, among others, the chairman of the Department of Geological Sciences, Prof Dr Md. Sakawat Hossain, departmental teacher Dr Delwar Hossain, Dr A.T.M. Shakhawat Hossain, Dr M. Julleh Jalalur Rahman, Dr Md. Sharif Hossain Khan, MD. Emdadul Haque, Professor Dr. Syeda Fahliza Begum, Dr. Hossain Md. Sayem, Associate Professor Dr. Md.
