Last-minute preparations are going on in the Department of Fine Arts of Jahangirnagar University to mark the first day of the Bangla new year, Pohela Boisakh, celebrating the occasion with grand festivities and colourful arrangements like every year.

Students of the department are spending busy time drawing and crafting small and big masks in the shape of endemic animals like owls, tigers, elephants, horses and others. They make colourful shapes of artefacts and crafts by tickling the paintbrush on ordinary papers and potteries.

The slogan for this year's Mongol Shovajatra is 'Borish-Dhora Majhe Shantir Bari,' which means 'let the water of peace fall on the earth', an effigy of giant Payra (Pigeon) as a symbol of peace will lead the joyous procession. Besides, two motifs of Tepa Putul, traditional terracotta toy dolls of this land, will also be there.

Students of the department working there said, "Pigeon is a symbol of peace. In order to stop violence, war, poverty and inequality in the country, it is made a subject of this year. Besides, We belong to the soil of the motherland. Both the Tepa Putul as motifs have been highlighted the traditional Bengali folk art."

In the Old Arts Building, a bunch of students are selling paper-made flowers, animals, masks, artefacts, crafts and other coloured potteries. They said, "We are all working together hard; excited to celebrate in full swing even though the campus is closed."

Mohammad Shamim Reza, Assistant Professor of the department, shared, "We have made 'Payra', a symbol of peace, in accordance with the theme of this year. Two Tepa Dolls are made as examples of our traditional pottery. Along with that, masks have been made in the pattern of owls, tigers, elephants and horses.

"This time no program will be organised separately from the Fine Arts Department. Mongol Shobhajatra and other cultural programs will be done in accordance with the university's arrangements."

The day will start with the exchange of new year greetings amongst the vice-chancellor of the university Dr Md Nurul Alam, and other teachers, officials, staff and students from 8:15 am to 9:15 am, as said in a notice signed by the registrar (contractual) of the university Rahima Kaneez.

Then at 9:45 am, Mongol Shobhajatra will start from Business Studies Faculty Building and end at the TSC area with the participation of teachers, officials, staff, students and other stakeholders of the University. Before the beginning of the procession, the National Anthem and the song, 'Eso Hey Boishakh', will be played.
