JU Students' Union demands suspension of building construction without a master plan

Bangladesh Students' Union, Jahangirnagar University (JU) branch has demanded to suspend infrastructure construction until a master plan is formulated for the ongoing development projects.

This demand was announced in a press release signed by the Office Secretary, Mahmudul Hasan Hridoy, after the exchange meeting organised with teachers, officials and students on the issue of development projects in Senate Hall on Thursday evening.

They claimed there was an opportunity to reduce the cost by 97 crores by completing the second administrative building at 40 crores.

The lecture theatre under construction can solve the classroom crisis, so building new academic buildings in new locations would be a waste of public money.

Considering the environment of this residential University, a 6-storey building can be constructed instead of a 10-storey building.

Deforestation can be prevented by completing Arts and Humanities, Mathematics and Physics and Biology Faculty buildings instead of building extensions.

By quoting the President of the organisation, Imtiaz Arnab and General Secretary Amartya Roy, the press release said what the university administration should do is reflect the cost reduction policy by formulating a master plan through a clear strategy based on the opinions of all stakeholders in the current economic reality of the Bangladesh government.

Despite repeated demands, the administration has failed to formulate the master plan even in the last 5 years.

Implementation of development projects of more than Tk 1445 crore without any master plan made BSU-JU agitated the students.
