Prof. Md Motaher Hossain, provost of Begum Sufia Kamal Hall of Jahangirnagar University, has resigned in protest of the theft incident at midnight, along with two other girls' dormitory halls. Professor KM Akkas Ali of the Institute of Information Technology (IIT) has been given the charge of the new provost of that hall.

This information was circulated in an official notice signed by Rahima Kaneez, Registrar (contractual) of the university, on Monday.

It is said in the notice after accepting the resignation of Begum Sufia Kamal Hall provost and Professor of IBA-JU, Md. Motaher Hossain, Professor KM Akkas Ali of the Institute of Information Technology (IIT), was appointed as provost of the hall from the date of joining until further notice.

Motaher Hossain said about the resignation, "I resigned as a protest due to the recent incident of theft took place in the hall. In 2019, I applied for increasing height of boundary wall of hall, applied for halogen light in 2021, but administration did not implement any. As a result, incidents of student harassment including theft are happening. Besides, the detailed reasons are mentioned in my resignation letter."

He suspects there must be some conspiracy behind the movement in only Sufia Kamal Hall, even though the incident occurred in three halls.

It is to be noted that on Sunday, March 12, an unidentified person entered the Sufia Kamal Hall, Sheikh Hasina Hall and Khaleda Zia Hall at around 3 to 5 am and abused the female students with obscene language and tried to steal the belongings of the residents after breaking window glasses.

A similar incident happened a few days ago, and there were allegations of theft, but no actions were taken vigilantly.

The new provost of Sufia Kamal Hall, Professor KM Akkas Ali, said, "I have received the letter of joining. I will officially take over tomorrow."

When asked about the recent incidents of theft, he said, "It has happened in two other halls including Sufia Kamal Hall. I will take appropriate action in this regard."

He further said, "Such an incident has never happened in Jahangirnagar University before, but it is necessary to find out who's behind that."

It is to be noted that Professor KM Akkas Ali has previously served as Warden and Resident Teacher of Alberuni Hall and Sheikh Hasina Hall, respectively.
