Students of Khulna University staged a demonstration on Friday night after a teacher was physically assaulted, allegedly by a former student, on the campus.

Witnesses said Hasan Mahmud Saky, a lecturer in the History and Civilization Discipline of the university and also the Assistant Director of Student Affairs, was assaulted allegedly by Abdullah Noman, a former student of the university from the 2018 batch, in front of the academic building around 10 pm on Friday.

He was later taken to Khulna Medical College and Hospital.

The reason behind the attack is yet to be known, UNB reports.

During the protest, students declared Abdullah Noman persona non grata on campus for life and demanded swift punitive action against him.

Khulna University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim denounced the attack.

The VC said, “I am speechless. Attacking a teacher is a vile and disgraceful act—completely unthinkable. In the 35-year history of Khulna University, no such heinous incident has ever occurred.”

“An attack on one teacher is an attack on the entire academic community. The university administration will do everything necessary to ensure the attacker faces appropriate punishment.”
