The University Grants Commission (UGC) and Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) have signed an MoU to implement joint collaborative activities to improve the quality of higher education and research in Bangladesh.
In the presence of Malaysian Minister of Higher Education Dato' Seri DiRaja Dr Zambry bin Abdul Kadir, the UGC Chairman Prof. SMA Faiz and EMGS CEO Novie Tajuddin exchanged the MoU in a ceremony on Thursday.
Earlier on Wednesday, the UGC Chairman and EMGS CEO signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
Under this agreement, the two institutions have agreed to exchange updated information related to higher education, inform Bangladeshi students about higher education opportunities in Malaysia, provide assistance in the admission process to Malaysian universities, provide information on scholarships and financial assistance, and conduct research and capacity-building activities.
The event was attended by Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia Shameem Ahsan.
Regarding the agreement, the UGC Chairman said that 177 universities are being run in Bangladesh under government and private management.
“Bangladesh's initiative in creating higher education opportunities is undoubtedly commendable. But along with the expansion of higher education, improving the quality of education is also very important. Currently, the UGC is considering improving the quality of higher education as a major priority,” he added.
He expressed hope that the MoU signed between the two institutions has paved the way for joint cooperative activities in the higher education sector.
UGC member Prof Mohammad Anwar Hossain said that Malaysia has created a new type of education model by combining its Islamic values with the modern education system of the Western world.
He opined that this model can play a helpful role in shaping the higher education of Bangladesh.
He further said that it is possible to move Bangladesh forward by incorporating the main foundation of the July Movement, “social justice”, in the education system of Bangladesh and formulating a framework for mutual cooperation in higher education, including research cooperation, with Malaysia.
High Commissioner Shameem Ahsan assured all-round cooperation in the implementation of this cooperation. He said that this agreement will open up more opportunities for Bangladeshi students and researchers.
About 6,288 Bangladeshi students are studying in Malaysian higher education institutions.
