To mark World Autism Awareness Day, Jahangirnagar University's 'Anandashala: Special Needs Education Center (SNEC-JU)' organized a colorful procession and a discussion session focused on inclusivity and empathy for individuals with special needs on Thursday.
The event began at 10 a.m. with a spirited rally led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, which commenced from the Anandashala premises and concluded in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence. A short but impactful discussion meeting followed.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the importance of harmony in society, drawing parallels between ecological interdependence and human inclusivity. “Just as different species coexist in nature through mutual cooperation, we must also embrace and support individuals with special needs,” he said.
He called for a shift in policymaking attitudes to reduce discrimination and promote acceptance, saying, “If this mindset is reflected at the policymaking level, we can eliminate discrimination against individuals with special needs.”
The event was attended by a host of university dignitaries, including Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Sohel Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Abdur Rab, as well as institute directors, the proctor, faculty members, and administrative officials.
Professor Dr. Rumana Rois, Director (Honorary) of Anandashala and Chair of the Department of Statistics and Data Science, presided over the event, highlighting Anandashala's continued efforts to foster a more inclusive academic environment.
World Autism Awareness Day, observed annually on April 2, was established by the United Nations in 2007 to raise awareness and promote acceptance of individuals on the autism spectrum.
The day serves as a global call to action for advancing the rights, dignity, and inclusion of people with autism.
It is marked worldwide through various programs, including educational seminars, community events, awareness campaigns, and inclusive initiatives.
