The maximum temperature in Bangladesh could surpass 45°C during the April-May heatwave periods by 2030 due to climate change, according to the latest study by the Environment and Social Development Organisation (ESDO).

By 2050, temperatures could reach even 46°C if current trends continue, potentially devastating agriculture and food production in the country, the ESDO study reveals.

The study, titled “The Impact of Heatwaves in Bangladesh: Historical Trend, Present Challenges, and Future Projection,” was launched at a programme held at the Women's Voluntary Association (WVA) auditorium in the city on Tuesday.

The ESDO team conducted the study using meteorological data from 1972 to 2023. The report highlighted four key factors contributing to Bangladesh experiencing its highest temperature on record, reaching 43.8°C in 2024.

"ESDO has made this projection based on previous trends. If these trends continue, the future temperature will be intolerable for us. Comprehensive, long-term policies should be implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance resilience against future heatwaves," said ESDO’s Chairperson, Syed Marghub Morshed, also a former secretary of the Bangladesh government.

Dr Shahriar Hossain, Senior Policy and Technical Advisor for ESDO and lead author of the study, said: "The current extreme heatwave in Bangladesh, with temperatures exceeding 40°C, underscores the urgent need to combat climate change, as millions suffer health issues and critical sectors like food and agriculture face severe challenges. We also need to change unsustainable urbanisation and adopt sustainable and environment-friendly urban planning."
