Volunteers have a crucial role to play in mitigating climate-related damage, experts have said at an event in Dhaka city, particularly referencing their significant efforts during the recent Sylhet floods.

They said this at the event - organised by Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO)-Bangladesh - at Dhaka University’s (DU) Senate Building on Tuesday marking the International Volunteer Day-2023.

Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, vice chancellor of DU, emphasised Bangladesh's vulnerability to climate change, particularly in disaster-prone coastal areas.

He encouraged cultivating a volunteer spirit and the mentality of offering concessions, viewing them as essential forms of volunteerism.

At the same time, ASM Maksud Kamal envisioned a future where the youth actively engage in volunteer work to shape a beautiful and resilient country.

Kabirul Haque Kamal, country director of VSO-Bangladesh, echoed the same sentiment, stressing the need for collective volunteer efforts to propel the nation towards prosperity.

He acknowledged the government's support for volunteers and expressed hope for increased opportunities.

Darussalam Haris Othman, the high commissioner of Brunei Darussalam in Dhaka, praised VSO Bangladesh for its dedication to working with volunteers.

Voluntary work has the transformative power to change lives and safeguard communities from the impacts of climate change, he said.

Hamid Khan, director (admin) of the Department of Youth Development, highlighted the pivotal role of volunteers in national development.

Bangladesh's evolution from a least developed to a developing country was attributed, in part, to the indispensable role of voluntary work, he said.

The event featured two panel discussions on climate change, where panelists shared insights and engaged with questions from the youth attendees.

During the event, various volunteer organisations were recognised for their outstanding contributions, with 20 individuals receiving awards for their exemplary voluntary service.

Pro Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Professionals Prof Khondaker Mokaddem Hossain and representatives from ILO Bangladesh and GIZ Bangladesh, among others, attended the event.
