The draft of the 'Health Protection Act', aimed at ensuring the safety of medical professionals and patients, is at the final stage and it will be placed in the parliament soon, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen said on Sunday.

"If any irregularities are seen in private diagnostic centres and clinics, the civil surgeon should take responsibility. I will take the Health Protection Act to the National Parliament. Because it is my duty to protect the doctors as well as the patients,” said the minister.

Dr Samanta Lal Sen made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a view exchange meeting with teachers and students at M Abdur Rahim Medical College in Dinajpur.

The minister said that the civil surgeons of the concerned districts have been instructed to prevent any irregularities in the private clinics. Besides, according to the rules, “Wherever a doctor is posted, he/she must stay there. No compromise will be made in this regard,” he said.

Dr Sen said, "We have to increase the facilities of government medical colleges. Medical colleges produce doctors. If the quality of medical colleges increases and we provide advanced modern education, we will get more skilled doctors."

Health Services Division Secretary Md Jahangir Alam highlighted the importance of doctors completing post-graduate in all existing subjects and spoke about the initiative to create supernumerary posts for doctors.

M Abdur Rahim Medical College Principal Prof Dr A F M Nurullah presided over the meeting, while the whip of the parliament Iqbalur Rahim, DGHS directorate Prof Dr ABM Khurshid Alam along with officials of the health department and local administration were present at the meeting among others.

The health minister said “There are many problems, I know many things, I myself am a victim. That is why I am fully aware of the quality improvement, dignity, and other issues of doctors.”

"That's why I am running around the country intending to see the reality of health care with my own eyes", he said.

The minister warned that no private hospital or clinic can work without approval.
