Bangladesh witnessed the first ever successful separation of twins, joined at the spine, after a 15-hour surgery on Monday night.

Surgeons at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) conducted the separation procedure of the conjoined twins, Nuha and Naba.

A 100-member medical team, including 39 expert physicians led by BSMMU Dean, Faculty of Surgery, Prof Dr Mohammad Hossain, performed the surgery from 9 am to 12 pm on Monday.

Doctors confirmed that the babies are doing well after the surgery, and they are now in the intensive care unit.

The first phase of the surgery to separate the attached spine of the babies was performed on January 31 last year.

After visiting the babies at BSMMU on Tuesday, Health Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen, in a media briefing, said, “The babies are now separated. They are doing well.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken responsibility for the cost of the treatment of the twins, he said, adding that the PM is personally bearing all the expenses of their treatment.

BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Sharfuddin Ahmed also attended the briefing, where he shared details of the surgery.

The twins, Nuha and Naba are from the northern Kurigram district. They were born in March 2022. Their father Alamgir Rana and mother Nasrin took them to BSMMU in April, in the same year as the twins shared an attached spine at birth.

They started taking treatment under Prof Dr Mohammad Hossain at BSMMU. Soon after their story was unveiled, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced that she would fund the surgery to separate the attached spine.
