Just like the right to freedom or a fair public hearing, access to safe drinking water and sanitation is everyone’s right. But sadly, in the real world, it doesn’t always work that way. More than 665 million people in the world lack access to safe drinking water. According to the UNICEF Report 2018, only 34.6% of the total population in Bangladesh has access to safe drinking water.

To solve this major issue sustainably, KK Foundation (KKF) launched a program named “Mayeen” in 2019, which means Fresh Water Stream. The program was introduced to help the communities in impactful, innovative, and sustainable manners to contribute towards SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation). KKF is providing the facilities through the MAP Framework Model which not only helps to understand the impact of an existing project but also plays a role to improve future projects.

The project does not end with the arrival of clean water as understanding the importance of sanitation and hygiene is equally as important. Only the combined effort of all these can prevent fatal diseases. KKF implements numerous types of technology and method while providing safe water as each location demands a unique way to solve the problem. The Foundation mainly focuses its work on the isolated parts of the country as nearly 65% population who don’t have access to clean water live in rural and remote areas of Bangladesh. In addition, KKF carefully chooses local experts as its partner while funding a project. A community-centered approach, excellent reporting practices, and a deep understanding of sustainable water project implementation are a must for every partner KKF works with.

One might ask why Double PlatformTubewell?- since 2017 about 1.3 million people were victims of floods and the number increases more than 10 million in 2022 when along with Rangpur, Dinajpur area, Sylhet area was inundated badly. More than 20% of the flood victims suffer the symptoms of water borne diseases such as typhoid, cholera, leptospirosis and hepatitis as well as worm/helminthes infection. Installation of double platform tubewell gave positive solution in our pilot projected areas.

Under the Mayeen Program, KKF completed several projects since 2019. Till date it has established nine (9) Double PlatformTubewell in northern and southern flood prone areasand  four reservoirs at Khagrachari in Chittagong Hill Tracts to serve the local community and another four (4) are in the pipeline.

Through the Mayeen Program, KKF is already impacting the lives of disadvantaged people in multiple ways. At present, from Mayeen, more than 8000 people have access to clean and safe water. Furthermore, around 3500 children and elderly people are now protected from lethal water-borne diseases. Women and girl children need to spend less time to collect water and might able to spend more time in study as well as having quality time for other means.

KKF is continuously striving to improve its Mayeen Program, which in turn will eradicate this problem. Because KKF believes in a world where everyone has safe drinking water, forever.
