Bangladesh economy may face deep crisis after one year: SANEM

Local think-tank SANEM on Saturday opined that Bangladesh’s economy will fall into deep crisis after one year as the budget does not adequate recovery plan.

"The economy is already in crisis. In addition, we will graduate from LDC status in 2026. The next few years will be really crisis-laden time," said SANEM Executive Director Prof Selim Raihan.

He was replying to journalists after presenting the SANEM analysis on the proposed budget in Dhaka.

"Actually our economic fundamentals are really weak. It will be tough to recover from the crisis with this typical budget," Prof Raihan added.

He apprehended that the inflation would not ease but rather would widen.

The budget does not have any special steps which will facilitate to growth of the economy at 6.75 per cent, and the investment-GDP ratio to 32 per cent, Prof Raihan said.

SANEM Research Director Dr Sayema Haque Bidisha presented the budget analysis saying there were not adequate measures in the budget to recover from the economic crisis.

Tax-net will have to be widened and whitening of black money provision will have to be scrapped, she said.

SANEM demanded the formation of a high-powered parliamentary body to fight against the widespread corruption in the government.
